Benitez to be given £18 million to spend on Spaniard

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is to be given the £18 million he wants to sign Valencia winger David Silva. The Spaniard has been linked with a move to Anfield for weeks now after his terrific displays in the European Championships for Spain, which saw them lift the trophy.

The 22-year old winger is more than likely to leave the Mestalla this summer after Valencia admitted they would have to sell in order to balance their books. Benitez has supposedly had more arguments with the American owners this week, due to his determination to sign Gareth Barry.

The owners make the point that they have Xabi Alonso and then therefore don’t need another central midfield player in Gareth Barry, which I would tend to agree with. Meanwhile, if Liverpool were to indeed sign Silva, I feel it would severally boost their title ambitions due to the players skill and pace.

Spurs close on £8 million defender

Tottenham are closing on the signing of Manchester City defender Vedran Corluka. The Croatian international only joined the Blues last season but has impressed Spurs boss Juande Ramos during his first season in the Premier League.

City signed the 22-year old for £7 million last summer but are set to receive at least £8 million if he does move to White Hart Lane. City boss Mark Hughes confirmed yesterday that Spurs were interested in the defender but as yet nothing has been finalised. Corluka was left out of City’s 1-0 victory over AC Milan yesterday, fuelling intense rumours that he was in London having a medical.

I personally feel Corluka is a quality player defender and will be a superb signing for Spurs. However I do think he isn’t the smartest in the defending sense. He is a very attack minded right-back who is prone to being caught out of position but he I think he will be a great replacement for Pascal Chimbonda at White Hart Lane.

Is Corluka good enough for your team? Join the Daily Mirror’s, You the Manager (through the link at the top) and sign the Croatian star for just £4 million. Quality buy!

Portsmouth set to sign Kaboul

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham defender Younes Kaboul is set to join Portsmouth on Monday after agreeing personal terms with the FA Cup winners.

Kaboul will make the move for a transfer fee of around five million pounds if he passes a medical on Monday.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp has been chasing Kaboul for several weeks and appears to have beaten Aston Villa and Sunderland to the French centre-back’s signature.

The 22-year-old was told he could leave White Hart Lane after suffering a disappointing debut season in the Premier League.

“On Monday Younes Kaboul will be at the club for a medical,” a Portsmouth spokesman said after the team’s Community Shield defeat against Manchester United on Sunday.

“After long discussions we agreed personal terms on Friday and if all goes well he will sign on Monday.”
