Portsmouth target Wright-Phillips after selling Muntari to Inter

Portsmouth are preparing a bid for Chelsea’s Shaun Wright-Phillips after yesterday accepting an offer from Internazionale for the Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari, said to be in the region of €14m (£11m). Muntari is keen to join the Italian champions and if the deal goes through it will almost certainly end their immediate interest in Frank Lampard.

Wright-Phillips has been a target of Harry Redknapp for some time but Portsmouth’s manager has lacked the funds to move for the winger. That will not be a problem once Muntari, who Portsmouth signed from the Serie A side Udinese for £7m in May last year, returns to Italy. A five-year deal is expected to be concluded with Inter before next week.

Redknapp insisted last week that he had no plans to sell Muntari, describing the 23-year-old as a “top player”, but the size of the offer, coupled with the African’s eagerness to leave, appears to have swayed his judgment. Muntari started 31 games for Portsmouth last season, including the FA Cup final win over Cardiff City.

Part of the fee Portsmouth receive from Inter will go to Udinese as part of a sell-on agreement but enough will be left to make a more than viable offer for Wright-Phillips, who is with Chelsea on their tour of the Far East but could be tempted to leave the club having been on the fringes since arriving at Stamford Bridge from Manchester City for £21m in 2005. Aston Villa are also said to be interested in the 26-year-old.

Any reluctance the new Chelsea manager, Luiz Felipe Scolari, may have regarding losing Wright-Phillips will be eased by the knowledge that it seems all but certain he will retain Lampard for the coming season at least. The England midfielder has been the subject of strong interest from Inter after refusing to sign a new four-year deal at Chelsea and has been courted with great vigour by Jose Mourinho ever since his former Chelsea manager took over at San Siro.

But the impending arrival of Muntari seemingly signals the end of Inter’s pursuit until January at least. At that point Lampard - who scored in Chelsea’s 4-0 victory over the Chinese side Guangzhou Pharmaceutical on Wednesday and is expected to again feature against Chengdu Blades in Macau tomorrow - will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with whoever he likes if he has not extended a deal which expires next summer.

Bayern Reject Frankfurt Approach For Ottl

Eintracht Frankfurt have been unsuccessful in a bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Andreas Ottl.

Eintracht Frankfurt chairman Heribert Bruchhagen has revealed that the Adler have been rebuffed in their attempts to sign Andreas Ottl from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Having enquired about the availability of Ottl, Frankfurt were told that the midfielder was not for sale at any price.

“We really wanted Andreas Ottl from Bayern and have tried to get him twice, but our bids have been turned down” Bruchhagen said.

The Frankfurt supremo has now turned his attention to other targets after being asked by trainer Friedhelm Funkel to provide him with one more midfielder.

“I have told Mr. Bruchhagen my wish to have a potent all-rounder who can push forward out of defensive situations” Funkel said after his side’s 2-0 win over Wigan on Tuesday.

Ottl managed 19 appearances for Bayern last season, mostly as a substitute but managed three goals in the process.

Barca Set For New €25m Trezeguet Bid

According to the Corriere dello Sport, Barcelona are set to launch a fresh transfer bid in the region of €20m to €25m for Juventus hitman David Trezeguet.

Trezeguet has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona over the past couple of months, and new Coach Josep Guardiola is said to be desperate to sign the prolific marksman.

In the last few weeks the 30-year-old’s name has not been associated so strongly with the Bluagrana as it had been earlier in the summer, however this has changed in recent days.

It is believed that Guardiola has resurrected his ambitions to sign Trezeguet, and indeed the Corriere dello Sport today claims that he is ready to table an offer of €20m to €25m.

Juve have always stated that the prolific marksman, who arrived in Turin from Monaco in 2000, would be staying but their resolve will surely be put to the test should they receive such an offer.

With Trezeguet set to turn 31 later this year, and with a host of top class strikers already at the club, such as Del Piero, Amauri, Iaquinta and Giovinco, Juve may decide that the money is too good to turn down.

If Trezegol were to sign for Barca, he would hook up with old Monaco pal, and good friend Thierry Henry.
