Spurs agree deal for keeper Gomes

Heurelho Gomes

Tottenham have agreed a deal with PSV Eindhoven to sign goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, subject to personal terms, a medical and a work permit.

Gomes, 27, has played for Brazil and helped PSV to the Dutch title last season conceding only 24 league goals.

His arrival will alarm Paul Robinson who was dropped from the Spurs side last season by boss Juande Ramos.

Gomes made his name at Cruzeiro in Brazil before moving to PSV in 2004 where he has won four Dutch titles.

He will be a familiar face to Tottenham fans as he played a part in Spurs exiting the Uefa Cup last season, when he saved a Jermain Jenas penalty in a shootout PSV won 6-5 in the last 16 of the competition.

Robinson had a torrid time last season not only losing his place in the Spurs team but also being dropped from England by new manager Fabio Capello.

The 27-year-old did play in Tottenham’s Carling Cup win over Chelsea but was dogged by the embarrassing goal conceded at the start of England’s Euro 2008 qualification campaign in 2006, when a Gary Neville back-pass hit a divot and rolled into the net giving Croatia a 2-0 win.

Robinson, who has also played for Leeds, has been linked with Aston Villa during the summer.

Gomes is Ramos’s second big signing in June after he captured Mexico international Giovani Dos Santos from Barcelona for an initial £4.7m.

Croatian midfielder Luka Modric also joined the club in April for £16.5m.

Benayoun eager to stay at Anfield

yossi-benayoun

Yossi Benayoun wants to stay and fight for his place at Liverpool, even if the club are willing to let him go.

The 28-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move away from Anfield, with Tottenham, Portsmouth and Ajax all reported as potential suitors.

“He is a good player so it is only normal that these clubs would be interested in signing him,” his agent, Ronen Katsav, told BBC Sport.

“But Yossi is very happy at Liverpool, everything is perfect for him there.”

He added: “He sees his future at Liverpool. Even if the club wanted to sell him, then Yossi would say he would like to stay.”

Benayoun arrived at Anfield for a fee of £5m from West Ham last summer after an impressive couple of seasons with the Hammers.

Despite struggling to hold down a regular first team place in Rafael Benitez’s side, the Israel captain still managed to score 11 goals in his debut season.

He starred in Liverpool’s record Champions League victory over Besiktas last November, scoring a hat-trick as the Reds ran out 8-0 winners.

So far this summer, Liverpool have allowed John Arne Riise to join Roma for £4m as Benitez looks to build a squad capable of challenging for the title next season.

The Liverpool boss has also turned down a £9m offer from Portsmouth for striker Peter Crouch, while he is set to follow-up the signing of Swiss full-back Philip Degen with the capture of Italian left-back Andrea Dossena from Udinese.

Johnson not for sale, says Moyes

Andrew Johnson

Everton manager David Moyes has insisted that England striker Andrew Johnson is not for sale.

Speculation has mounted over the 27-year-old’s future, with several clubs reportedly interested in him.

However, Moyes has moved quickly to dispel the rumours and said the club have no intention of letting him leave as he remains a key part of his plans.

“Andy Johnson is not for sale - it is that simple,” Moyes told the official club website.

“He is a highly-valued member of my senior squad and I look forward to seeing him when the players report back for pre-season training.”

Johnson joined Everton in 2006 for £8.6m from Crystal Palace and has scored 22 goals in all competitions from 64 starts.

He only signed a new five-year deal with the club in November 2007 after being linked with a move to West Ham.

Right-back Hibbert ruptured his medial ligaments in the penultimate game of last season against Arsenal and faces an anxious wait to see if he will require surgery.

“I’m hoping for the specialist to say that I won’t need an operation and I just want to kick on from where I am now,” Hibbert told evertonTV.

“We didn’t realise at first how bad it was and then the specialist said it was bad - but it’s just one of those things.”

Yobo has revealed that he has been suffering from an ankle knock while on international duty with Nigeria this summer.

The defender said he has been playing through the pain for his country but is confident he will be fit in time for Everton’s Premier League opener against Blackburn on 16 August.

“What many people don’t know is that I have been playing with an ankle injury,” he confirmed.

“I was supposed to rest it but we had crucial games to play and we were short at the back so I was needed because of injuries so I just had to force myself to play.

“The medical team here in Nigeria have been great and they helped me to manage it for this period.

“Now I have to give it the rest it needs so I can be ready for pre-season training with my club.”
