French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt has expressed her admiration for Zinedine Zidane for his infamous head-butt on Marco Materazzi during the 2006 World Cup final.

Betancourt has been in the news recently after she was rescued from captivity, having spent six-and-a-half years as a political hostage in Colombia to the guerrilla group FARC.

When asked about some of the ordeals she had to go through during this time, Betancourt surprisingly mentioned the 2006 World Cup final between France and Italy.

“The game caused problems and tensions in the camp where I was a prisoner,” she revealed.

“Some people were on my side and were supporting France, while others took the Italian side.”

Italy won the final on penalties on penalties following a 1-1 draw, however the game will forever be remembered for Zinedine Zidane’s vicious head-butt on Marco Materazzi in extra time, which saw the French legend sent off.

“I adored the head-butt by Zidane and I think I would have done the same thing,” said Betancourt.

“I stand against those who criticised him.”
