Arsenal and Liverpool miss out on England midfielder

Arsenal and Liverpool have missed out on Manchester City midfielder Michael Johnson after the player signed a new long-term deal at Eastlands. The England under-21 international had been heavily linked with a move to either Anfield or the Emirates but the chances of a move now are dead.

Johnson, 21, has made a major impact at the City of Manchester stadium since breaking into the first team almost eighteen months ago. Both Rafa Benitez and Arsene Wenger were extremely keen to persuade Johnson to leave City, with a £12 million bid being rumoured by both sides.

I am delighted to see Johnson opt to stay at City, largely down to the fact that I am a City fan myself. I also think it is a very intelligent decision from the player who will benefit greatly from this decision because if he had opted to leave he would not of been guaranteed a first team place at Arsenal or Liverpool.

Kuyt Steals It For Liverpool

Liverpool 1 Standard Liege 0

A night of frustration for Liverpool finally saw the Reds secure Champions League qualification. With only minutes separating the sides from penalties, Dirk Kuyt stole the win for the Reds.

A lively first half saw Liverpool open the game in determined fashion yet it was the visitors who had the better opportunities, forcing Pepe Reina into two excellent saves and inserting huge anxiety into the Anfield crowd.

The first chance for Liege came as early as the seventh minute. Mbokani robbing Aurelio outside the box and unleashing a rasping low shot which forced Reina into an excellent save, diving low to his right to tip the ball around the post.

The chance shocked the hosts out of their opening momentum and allowed the visitors to grow in confidence as they slowly settled down into what was a lively first half, complete with some tasty tackles.

Whilst Rafael Benitez had called for an all round improvement in his side’s performance from the first leg, there was little evidence in the opening 45 minutes. The Belgians, by contrast, looked far the hungrier side although still lacking that cutting edge which saw them fail to take their opportunities in the home tie

After a quarter of an hour another outstanding chance fell Liege’s way. Some poor defending from Liverpool saw De Carmago and Mbokani free in the box, yet both players conspired to get in each others way. However, the ball eventually fell to Fellaini who forced Reina into another first class stop.

The home side were wobbling and the Kop which had started the game in fine voice became noticeably agitated. Still, Benitez’s side improved slightly towards the break but their best chances were long range shots which failed to really trouble keeper Espinoza.

First Benayoun screwed a shot horribly wide after being put through by Gerrard before Alonso and Aurelio also tried their luck but without really testing the Liege stopper.

Perhaps Liverpool’s best chance of the half fell to Dirk Kuyt, five minutes from the interval but the Dutchman contrived to put his header well wide when he really should have done far better.

The home side clearly need to change something yet the second half began in much the same fashion. Benitez watched on, frown increasing by the minute, but the Spaniard waited until just past the hour mark before finally changing things by replacing Benayoun with Babel.

The substitution made little impact and still the hosts toiled, against a committed visiting side. Alonso, Kuyt and Gerrard all letting fly from range but Liverpool were unable to carve out any real danger and looked seriously disjointed. The disappointing Keane departed with ten minutes to go to be replaced by El Zhar.

Liege for their part appeared to sit back a little, as if content with a draw and willing to simply try and hit on the break. Whilst it may appear a dangerous tactic on a European night at Anfield, it saw them comfortably through the 90 minutes and into extra-time against the toothless Reds.

The additional minutes brought little in the way of chances with the game instead reaching stalemate. Indeed more fight appeared to be shown on the touchline, rather than the pitch, where Rafael Benitez and counter-part Laszlo Boloni indulged in a little gesticulation that didn’t look altogether friendly.

With ten minutes to go Arbeloa finally tested Espinoza with a fine shot that may have been going wide but which the Standard keeper met with a flying save. In any case it was the best effort of the extra half hour which was a tortuous affair for both sets of supporters.

However, with only minutes left Liverpool finally got the goal their performance simply didn’t merit. Babel crossed from the right and Dirk Kuyt, whose seems to reserve his goals almost exclusively for Europe, arrived at the far post to prod home the winner.

Liverpool: Reina, Aurelio, Carragher, Skrtel, Arbeloa, Kuyt, Gerrard, Alonso, Benayoun (Babel, 61), Torres, Keane (El Zhar, 83).

Standard Liege: Espinoza, Camozzato, Onyewu, Sarr, Dante, Dalmat (Jovanovic, 87), Fellaini, Defour, Witsel, De Camargo (Toama,100), Mbokani.

Premier League Preview: Liverpool - Middlesbrough

What: Premier League, round 2
Who: Liverpool (9th, 3pts), Middlesbrough (6th, 3pts)
When: Saturday, August 23 (1500 BST)
Where: Anfield, Liverpool

Improvement Needed

Both sides come into this game hungry for another Premier League victory in order to maintain perfect starts to the season. Last week Liverpool lacked sharpness and struggled against Roy Keane’s lively Sunderland side. A moment of Fernando Torres magic snatched Liverpool a victory late on but Rafael Benitez will certainly demand more from his men this weekend. Analysis of Middlesbrough’s victory over Spurs will confirm that Liverpool will have to raise their game to beat a Boro’ side who were full value for their three points last week.

More of the Same

Gareth Southgate has assembled a youthful side, spearheaded by the impressive Afonso Alves. Alves plays with the hybrid style of part traditional English centre forward coupled with a touch of Brazilian flair. Centre back David Wheater deputised at full-back and shone last week, in effect scoring twice after his first goal was wrongly disallowed. Stewart Downing, as ever, is a creative force in midfield but Tuncay’s tireless work down the right flank, if he plays in that role, will also be crucial. A slim line Mido made an almost instant impact from the bench and will be pushing Jeremie Aliadiere for a starting berth.

Off field distractions

‘Clear the air’ talks between Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez and chief executive Rick Parry took place this week in order to resolve issues over Liverpool’s transfer policy. Once again a united front has been presented for the cameras but whether these issues are truly resolved will remain to be seen. What this has meant is that Middlesbrough may have an off field distraction of their own as rumours mount once more that Liverpool are possibly looking to lure Stewart Downing from the Riverside. As much as Boro’ fans would normally want a class performance from their young winger, they may hope he remains a little bit quieter than normal at Anfield this Saturday.

TEAM NEWS

Liverpool

Ryan Babel has returned from the Olympics and is now available. He will probably start on the bench with Yossi Benayoun initially continuing on the left hand side. Javier Mascherano is still on Olympic duty and is thus unavailable. Xabi Alonso should be expected to be given an opportunity to prove his worth in the centre of midfield after impressing both as a substitute against Sunderland and whilst on international duty mid-week. A further change from last week could be that Daniel Agger slots in to the centre of Liverpool’s defence, replacing veteran Sami Hyypia.

Possible Starting XI: Reina, Arbeloa, Carragher, Agger, Dossena, Kuyt, Gerrard, Alonso, Benayoun, Keane, Torres

Middlesbrough

Justin Hoyte is available to make his debut but will struggle to dislodge David Wheater at right-back. This will mean that Southgate has to decide whether to field the same back four who did so well against Spurs or reshuffle in order to award Hoyte a starting berth. If Southgate opts to change his winning formula then Wheater could move to centre-half to partner Huth. This will mean that skipper Emanuel Pogatetz will move to left back and Andrew Taylor will miss out. Summer signings Didier Degard and Martin Emnes look likely to continue on the bench. Another decision for the Boro’ gaffer will be whether Aliardiere, Tuncay or Mido partner Alves up front. After linking himself with a move to Wigan this week, Mido may have made his managers mind up for him and could well be on the bench again. If so, Tuncay will play on the right with Aliardiere partnering Alves.

Possible Starting XI: Jones, Wheater, Pogatetz, Huth, Taylor, Tuncay, Shawky, O’Neil, Downing, Aliardiere, Alves

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Liverpool

Xabi Alonso’s expected return  after an influential second half display against Sunderland and two-goals for Spain mid-week will be eagerly awaited. Both of Liverpool’s expected strikers seem to enjoy playing against Middlesbrough. Last season Fernando Torres scored four times against them. Robbie Keane has scored seven times career goals against Boro’, scoring more against only one other club, Manchester City.

Middlesbrough

Afonso Alves will be the main threat up front, and will certainly keep the Liverpool defence on their toes. Potential Liverpool target Stewart Downing will also have more eyes on him than normal.

PREDICTION

Expect a close game at Anfield with Middlesbrough giving Liverpool a tough home start to their campaign. Torres though seems to like playing against Middlesborough and his class may once again make the difference. The return of Xabi Alonso to the starting XI will add a direction and precision that was lacking in the first half against Sunderland. Liverpool may just shade out Middlesbrough with it being hard to predict more than a goal separating the sides. Liverpool have the impetus of being at home, as well as the irrepressible Torres up front, and thus will be favourites to steal all three points. If this is the case then, it will be the first time under Benitez that Liverpool have won both of their opening two fixtures. After the final whistle we may find a happy Benitez echoing the same sentiments as he did last weekend; that essentially it is the result that matters.
